People and society

There are nine ethnic Micronesian and Polynesian ethnic groups. There has been an immigration mainly of Japanese, Chinese and Filipinos. Large emigration has resulted in a negative balance of migration. About 100 islands are inhabited. 50 percent of the population lives on Chuuk. Weno is largest city.

There is no official language. English is most commonly used; in addition, there are nine Austronesian languages.

There is no official religion. According to Countryaah, the majority are Catholics (53 percent) and Protestants (42 percent).

The four main islands each have their own international airport.
